I spoke to an Engineer who works for Ball-Foster Glass Container Company in Muncie, Indiana about your question. He informed me that the rule for glass manufacture is that 85% of the wieght of the bottle is from sand. So in order to find out the amount of sand used in a 16 oz. bottle, you will have to weigh the bottle (empty, of course!!) and then multiply the weight by 0.85. I can tell by the great question that you sent in, that one day you will be a terrific scientist!!! I'll see you in the lab.
