Actually, they might be able to... but not from the same Salmonella that 
makes humans sick.

The specific molecules on the outside of a bacteria cell will determine if 
that cell can attach to the intestines of the animal.  Other molecules 
determine if that cell can then invade and infect the intestinal cell.

Dogs and humans have intestinal cells with different characteristics, so it 
takes just the right kind of pathogenic bacterium to make each species 
sick.
