Regarding dairy cattle, we know that it would be "udderly" ridiculous for
them to be male. Regarding beef cattle, however, they can be both male and
female as explained by a rancher who does this for a living: Hi Glenn,
Yes they are both used, however some of the females are retained as
replacement stock for the older less productive females in a herd. This is
usually 10% to 20% of the total herd numbers are replaced each year. I
know some ranchers that purchase replacement females; we keep a percentage
of the ones we raise.
