Ted,

Soaking the jewelry in nail polish remover (acetone or ethyl acetate)
should do the trick.  Many stores also sell super glue remover, which
typically contains toluene and/or hexanes.  These solvents should have no
effect on gold, but they will dry out your hands so gloves are recommended.
