To make a battery with magnesium, all you need is another metal and an electrolyte solution, plus a couple of wires.
The simplest electrolyte is salt water, or you could use vinegar. To get a good voltage from your battery, use copper as the other metal. You won't get much power though, but you will get a good reading on a voltmeter.
See the diagram for how to set it all up.
Clean the metals with sandpaper first. If the voltmeter needle goes backwards, just connect the wires the other way.
