Heidi, you ask an interesting question. Caffeine is usually said to be the most widely used drug in society since it is found in so many popular beverages such as coffee, tea, and sodas; therefore there has been quite a bit of research examining the effects of caffeine on people. Caffeine is a mild stimulant. That means that it tends to increase the alertness of the person who consumes it. Scientists have tested people by having them drink coffee with or without caffeine and then giving them a variety of memory tests. Most of the experiments have shown a very slight improvement in memory in people after they have had caffeine, but some studies have shown no improvement. The improvement in memory is probably due to an increased alertness and not a real increase in memory. In addition, the improvement is usually seen only in people who consume caffeine on a regular basis anyway. In short, caffeine may improve memory a little, but only for a short period of time, and then usually only in people who consume drinks with caffeine in them in the first place. I hope this answered your question.
