A small ball of steel wool in plain water, salt water, and vinegar water
all rusted because of oxidation. The iron molecules in the steel wool
combined with oxygen molesules to form rust. The water made it easier for
the oxygen to attach to the iron so the steel wool left in air didn't rust
but neither did the one in the baking soda solution. Why not??
