Subject: what is independent and dependent variable in psychology?

i'm doing a desing paper right now where i have to operationally define self-
esteem, identify and specify selected levels of (IV),define (DV)and how is it 
measured?, what are the controls? and discuss ethics and debriefing. 

 But i'm having a hard time in doing my project because i don't understand IV 
and DV and how to measure it. i hope you can help me with some pointers so i 
can do my design paper. thank you very much
