Yes
The Owl Louse, Strigiphilus garylarsoni (Clayton), is named for Gary Larson, cartoonist and creator of the Far Side (now retired). Your classmate must have been reading Science News, which had a cover article devoted to unusual binomials (scientific names) just last month. The have a link to Doug Yanega's Home Page, which contains a comprehensive list of all unusual Latin names, not including the "usual" honorifics, like Fuchsia, Poinsettia, etc.
