Scorpions don't always hold their tails up. Often while resting they let their tail down and it tends to curl around next to them. Yes, they do flatten themselves, when hiding. They will hold the tail up when moving quickly while hunting or in a defensive postion if disturbed. However, there are other arthropods similar to scorpions in the arachnid family that are similar in appearance.

So, you could have a scorpion in your house, yeesh! Make sure you shake out your shoes before you put them on, if you see one there may be others!
