Hello Secret, thanks for your question. You asked: "How does Pepto-Bismol affect the heart rate of Daphnia?"

Pepto-Bismol is a medication containing bismuth subsalicylate used for upset stomachs and diarrhea. The literature out there (Google and Pubmed searches) does not suggest that Pepto-Bismol causes any changes in heart rate, at least in people.

To find the answer to your question, though, you will need to set up an experiment:

Control Group - Daphnia in ordinary water

Experimental Group - Daphnia in ordinary water + Pepto-Bismol

Monitor their heart rates and see if the Pepto-Bismol Daphnia experience an increase or decrease as compared to the Control Daphnia.

One thing to keep in mind: Since Pepto-Bismol has a pH of around 6.0, it's possible that you may see increases in the Pepto-Bismol Daphnia heart rate simply because they're stressed by their now slightly-acidic environment.

Good luck, and keep asking questions!

Sincerely,

G. Monreal
