Sexing beetles can be difficult.  Usually in lady beetles the male is 
slightly smaller than the female.  However, since there is a fair amount 
of overlap in size, this is only helpful if you have a large series.  If 
you find a pair of lady beetles mating the male is on top.

I could find no really good references on this subject, so I have had to 
go with experience.
