Unless you want to be what we call a nurse-anesthetist, you have to become a doctor first. This means four years of college, then four years of medical school, and then four years of residency training in anesthesiology. You probably should have a strong background in science and biology, but this is not required so much anymore. Many medical schools will accept people from other fields, like liberal arts or journalism or English, but they have to have outstanding grades too. You also have to take a medical school entrance exam, which is mostly science and biology. Anesthesiology is becoming harder to get into because many training programs have cut their class sizes. Many hospitals are using the less trained nurse-anesthetists, who work under the supervision of a anesthesiologist, instead, because they are cheaper for the hospitals. Fully trained anesthesiologists can expect to make over $200,000 a year after residency. Remember too, that you have to have a particular personality type to be an anesthesiologist. They are very much like airplane pilots; they are good at long lists of highly technical instructions, they have to have very good concentration, and work well under very high stress. Their motto is: "Long periods of sheer boredom punctuated by short periods of sheer terror." Good luck...
