Dear Jellasma,

Your question regarding the causes of idiopathic scoliosis
is not quite clear. The cause is not known. The signs that appear are
unlevel shoulders, a prominent breast, scapula, hip, or flank, poor
posture, and an obvious lateral curvature of the spine. There are three
types associated with certain age groups: infantile (1-3 y/o),
juvenile (3-10 y/o), and adolescent (pre-adolescents-adolescents).
Adolescent scoliosis is most common, accounting for 70 % of patients with
scoliosis. The main factors that go into diagnosing it are degree, balance,
and rotational component of the curvature.

There are several means used to correct the abnormal curvature,
such as the Milwaukee brace, exercise programs, Cotrel traction, body
casting, etc. Curvature greater than 40 degrees usually requires surgery,
which occurs in 5 to 10% of the cases. Recovery from surgery is often 8-12
months.

I hope this gives you some information that you can use.
Remember, sit properly, no slouching, eat well, and exercise regularly.
Bad backs are not the result of a one time event, but an accumulation of
bad habits with your posture. Strong abdominal muscles and proper lifting
are two safegards to a healthy back. Protect it because it's the only one
you have.

Fred Moore.
