Hi Karin,

Your detailed description of the turtle and the eggs leaves me in no doubt that this is a snapping turtle. They do have round eggs that are about 1 inch in diameter. These eggs which are usually laid in batches of 20-30 will probably hatch in September. Many turtles will dig several holes before actually laying. This may be a ploy to prevent potential predators from finding the eggs. Females are commonly found out of the water when they are searching for a place to lay their eggs.
