In physiological terms, mechanical digestion refers to the digestion that
occurs as food is chewed in the mouth (broken into smaller pieces) or that
occurs as food moves through the intestines (continual mixing). Chemical
digestion refers to the digestion that occurs from acids, bases and enzymes
that are released into the digestive tract in response to food. Chemical
digestion is by far the more significant of the two, although foods are not
totally digested without both.
