Ann,

Swollen toes and bulging armpits

In New England it is the Northern Leopard Frog that you are probably seeing. The best way to distinguish this species is during the breeding season.

During this time males will have vocal sacs bulging out of their armpits every time they call to a female.

Males also have swollen front feet. (Each species to their own!)

Females are generally slightly larger than males and during the breeding they are carrying around 20,000 eggs so they are much fatter too.

A field guide for Amphibians will help you out tremendously in answering these questions. Stokes Nature Guide written by Tom Tyning provides a lot of anecdotal information.
