Just dip the zinc in a dilute solution of nitric acid.  A small amount of 
the zinc oxide (and/or zinc hydroxide) on the surface of the metal will be 
etched away.  Effectively you will form Zn(NO)3 and water which will remain 
dissolved in the nitric acid.

Good luck and observe all appropriate precautions when handling strong 
acids!!!
